Healthy Air Technology – Improving Indoor Air Quality

The Air That You Breathe

Chunli Cao, the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Healthy Air Technology Ltd (HATL), has a strong background in aerodynamics and air pollution research. She obtained a Ph.D. in computational fluid dynamics from the University of Surrey’s Environmental Fluid Lab, a renowned institution focusing on air pollution. After completing her doctorate, Chunli joined Alstom Power as a Senior Application Engineer, where she worked on steam turbine performance improvement projects. However, she soon realised her passion lay in improving air quality and decided to pursue this field further.

Driven by her desire to make a direct impact on people’s lives and the environment, Chunli transitioned to the Building Research Establishment (BRE), focusing on indoor and outdoor air pollution, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency.  Chunli was appointed to lead various building-related projects in China, where she gained valuable experience in sustainable building practices.

Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Healthy Air Technology Ltd 5 years ago, in collaboration with a renowned scientist from Oxford University. Combining her expertise in building sciences and air pollution with the inventor’s groundbreaking DNO-Catalyst technology, the company aimed to revolutionise indoor air purification and promote healthier living environments.

Unique and Innovative

Healthy Air Technology’s innovative solution lies in its air purifiers that incorporate its patented DNO-catalyst technology. Unlike conventional purifiers, their technology effectively removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful pollutants that are typically challenging to eliminate. This unique feature sets their products apart from competitors, ensuring a cleaner and safer indoor environment for users.  Their RED dot award-winning product is the world’s first medical-grade air purifier designed to save energy.  As an innovative and unique product, Chunli thought that the MSDUK Innovation Challenge was the perfect opportunity for them.

The company’s expertise in aerodynamics and building design allows it to optimise its air purification solutions for specific environments, providing tailored and efficient solutions to diverse industries. Healthy Air Technology’s commitment to continuous improvement and customer well-being drives its research and development efforts, ensuring its products remain at the forefront of air purification technology.

One of their greatest achievements to date has been its successful expansion into international markets. With sales in six countries, including France, Nigeria, the Czech Republic, China, Singapore and the UK, the company has demonstrated global appeal and demand for its innovative air purification solutions. Their success in partnering with renowned organisations such as Team GB and big construction consulting firms, further highlights the effectiveness and trustworthiness of their products.

The MSDUK Innovation Challenge

Chunli Cao became aware of MSDUK (Minority Supplier Development UK) and the Innovation Challenge through industry networks and research. Recognising the potential for their innovative solutions to be showcased and supported, Healthy Air Technology decided to apply.

Beyond the financial incentive of the £20,000 cash prize, Healthy Air Technology was motivated to apply as they saw the Innovation Challenge as a brilliant platform, increase their visibility within the industry, and potentially forge strategic partnerships. Chunli says “We are particularly excited about the platform and to showcase our business to a wide audience. We look forward to exposure to MSDUK’s corporate network, networking opportunities with global brand leaders, and connecting with other ethnic minority entrepreneurs. It is a significant opportunity to gain recognition and expand our business.”

Prize-winning

Should Healthy Air Technology be announced as the overall winner of the MSDUK Innovation Challenge, they plan to strategically allocate the £20,000 cash prize to enhance their market presence and raise awareness about their products. They intend to use part of the funds to develop educational content, such as a chatbot, to educate the public about air quality and the importance of choosing the right air purifiers. This initiative aims to increase awareness and promote informed decision-making among consumers.

Furthermore, they are considering donating some of their air purifiers to charities or organisations focused on children’s health, such as Great Ormond Street Hospital. By doing so, they aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals who would benefit from cleaner indoor air environments.

Should You Apply for the Next MSDUK Innovation Challenge

Healthy Air Technology encourages other ethnic minority-led businesses to consider applying for the next MSDUK Innovation Challenge. Chunli says “If you are genuinely passionate about making a positive impact, the MSDUK Innovation Challenge can significantly contribute to your success.”

Chunli and Healthy Air Technology are excited about connecting with like-minded entrepreneurs and industry professionals, exchanging ideas, and exploring potential collaborations. They anticipate gaining valuable insights and knowledge from the conference sessions, workshops, and panel discussions, enabling them to stay informed about industry trends and advancements.

The MSDUK Innovation Challenge Finals will take place at the MSDUK Business and Innovation Show in London on 14th and 15th September 2023.  To purchase tickets, please visit: https://www.conference.msduk.org.uk

“Without MSDUK it would probably be a lot harder in terms of business-to-business sales functions because MSDUK gave us access to get our first client, Enterprise Rent-a-Car and from there we were able to snowball.”
