Dr Dupe Burgess, BSc, MBBS, MRCP, is the Founder and CEO of Bloomful. She began her career as a medical doctor, training in London and working in the NHS for seven years. During her time in the healthcare industry, Dr Burgess witnessed the challenges women face in accessing quality care for their gynaecological health issues. Motivated to make a difference, she decided to pursue a solution to improve women’s healthcare pathways.
Inspired by her medical experiences, Dr Burgess started Bloomful to address the complex and ambiguous pathways that women have to navigate to receive proper care for chronic pelvic conditions. Through Bloomful, Dr Burgess provides streamlined, accessible and affordable care for women, whilst also collecting valuable data for research purposes. The company has developed an online infrastructure that allows women to triage their symptoms and connect with women’s health specialists. Over the past two years, Bloomful has gained significant traction, with approximately 17,000 women already using and benefiting from their services.
Dr Burgess’ online platform, Bloomful, enables women to self-triage their symptoms, receive personalised information and advice, and connect with women’s health specialists for deeper consultations, tests and diagnoses. What sets Dr Burgess’ Bloomful apart from competitors is their focus on chronic pelvic conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis and fibroids, which can often go undiagnosed for years. By providing accessible and affordable care, Dr Burgess aims to reduce diagnosis timelines and empower women to take control of their health.
Dr Burgess says Bloomful’s greatest achievement to date has been the positive impact they have made on women’s lives. With approximately 12,000 women already using their platform, Dr Burgess has been able to deliver value and provide diagnoses for a significant portion of these women. By offering a streamlined and efficient process, they have shortened the often-lengthy journey women face in obtaining a diagnosis for their gynaecological conditions. Bloomful’s success lies in Dr Burgess’ ability to bridge the gap between women’s healthcare needs and the current healthcare system’s shortcomings.
Dr Burgess discovered the MSDUK Innovation Challenge through LinkedIn and recognising the opportunity it presented, she decided to apply for the challenge, seeing it as a valuable platform to showcase their mission-driven approach to addressing women’s healthcare issues.
Dr Burgess is looking forward to several aspects of the MSDUK Innovation Challenge Finals at the MSDUK Business and Innovation Show 2023. They are excited about the platform: “The MSDUK Innovation Challenge provides a great opportunity to pitch and showcase Bloomful in front of a panel of experts and investors. This is an invaluable opportunity to increase our visibility and attract potential partners.” Additionally, they are eager to benefit from the exposure to the corporate network of MSDUK and the networking opportunities with global brand leaders and other ethnic minority entrepreneurs. Building connections and collaborations with like-minded individuals and organisations is a significant advantage for Bloomful’s growth and success.
If announced as the overall winner, Bloomful plans to allocate the £20,000 cash prize strategically to benefit their business – they are currently in the process of developing the next version of their platform, which involves turning their working prototype into a clinically validated medical device. This undertaking requires resources, expertise and guidance from consultants. The cash prize would be used to cover these expenses and facilitate the transformation of their prototype. By investing in the development of their platform, Bloomful aims to enhance its capabilities, making it even more valuable for their users. They intend to use the prize money to achieve a significant uplift in user numbers, aiming to grow from 12,000 users to 50,000 users by the following year.
Bloomful encourages other ethnic minority entrepreneurs to consider applying for the next Innovation Challenge. They emphasise that participating in challenges like this presents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. It provides a platform for entrepreneurs to display their business, gain exposure, and connect with valuable organisations and individuals. Bloomful highlights the support and backing they have received from MSDUK, including relevant email notifications and opportunities, which they find to be of great value. Overall, Bloomful’s positive experience with the Innovation Challenge encourages other entrepreneurs to seize the chance to gain recognition, form partnerships and open doors for potential growth.
Bloomful is looking forward to several aspects of the conference. They are excited about the opportunity to meet other co-founders and connect with mission-driven businesses. The conference provides a platform to engage with like-minded individuals who are building valuable solutions for the world. Bloomful also expresses enthusiasm for pitching in front of experts and sponsors, recognising the significance of their feedback and potential for collaboration. Additionally, they are looking forward to the sessions offered during the conference, which they consider a valuable learning experience. Overall, Bloomful sees the conference as a valuable opportunity for networking, knowledge exchange and business growth.
Bloomful has an exciting roadmap ahead. Their immediate focus is on the development of the next version of their platform, which involves incorporating algorithms and personalised processes to address menopause-related issues. They recognise the unmet needs and lack of education surrounding menopause and aim to provide better tools for understanding symptoms and offering appropriate treatments and management options.
In addition to their work on the menopause algorithm, Bloomful is actively seeking to expand their user base. With the goal of reaching 50,000 users by next year, they are dedicated to enhancing the platform’s capabilities and user experience to attract a larger audience. This includes investing in resources and expertise to transform their working prototype into a clinically validated medical device, ensuring the platform’s effectiveness and reliability.
Bloomful also continues to seek opportunities for collaboration and partnerships within the healthcare industry. They recognise the importance of forming strategic alliances to further their mission of improving women’s health and well-being. By leveraging their innovative technology and building strong relationships, Bloomful aims to create a positive impact and empower women around the world.
Overall, Bloomful is committed to continual growth and advancement. They remain dedicated to making a difference in the lives of women, expanding their reach, and becoming a leading player in the field of women’s health technology.
