TRS honoured by BESA with special Trailblazer award

John Kilgannon, operational director of Dartford‐based heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical contractor TRS Ltd, has been honoured for his dedicated support to the process of modernising apprenticeships in the building engineering services industry.

He was one of the first senior industry figures to receive a special ‘Trailblazer’ award from the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) at its first national awards event in London this month.
The new Trailblazer framework for apprenticeships was launched by the government in 2014 with the aim of creating a more flexible system that would encourage more young people to take up careers in technical professions and help existing workers – of all ages – improve their skills and qualifications.

BESA is working with employers right across the built environment industry to develop apprenticeships in key technical sectors including: installation; service & maintenance; heating and plumbing; ductwork; ventilation hygiene; refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps; and has also started work on developing apprenticeships at higher and degree level.

A survey carried out by BESA’s training department found that 83% of apprentices believed their career prospects had improved because of securing a place on an apprenticeship scheme. 70% of employers said their productivity, and therefore business growth, was improved by taking on apprentices and every £1 of taxpayers’ money invested in apprenticeships at levels 2 and 3 will pay
back between £26 and £28 in long‐term economic benefits.

“Apprenticeships work by boosting economic productivity, growing our skills base and giving millions a leg up on the ladder of opportunity,” said BESA’s training director Tony Howard. “However, we are completely dependent on volunteers like John to help us develop these new style apprenticeships to ensure they deliver the type of modern skills needed by employers in our sector.”

TRS was set up in 1980 by chairman Satnam Dhaliwal and business has been growing ever since. It provides tailored building engineering services for clients in both the public and private sectors
including a range of new project and facilities management services.

The senior management team took the decision to start a construction division in 2005 and this was swiftly followed by diversification into the rail sector. TRS then expanded its heating, electrical and
projects capability in 2008.

John’s long experience of 35 years and specialist expertise was ideal for helping the team developing the service engineer Trailblazer on behalf of the whole industry.

“A modern apprenticeship goes much further than just developing technical skills,” he said. “We have made sure that the content of the new service engineer Trailblazer focuses on all aspects of modern working including communication skills. Apprentices should also learn about the conduct expected of them when representing their employer.

“Attitude and the way someone behaves is hugely important and has probably not received the attention it should have in the past,” added John. “It was very rewarding to be able to focus on this and all aspects of training as part of the Trailblazer process.”

TRS chairman Satnam Dhaliwal added that John’s work on Trailblazers was in tune with the company’s ethos of putting the community first and creating opportunities for all.

“There has never been a greater need for this kind of targeted training as the industry responds to tough new quality standards and the UK‐wide skills shortage,” he said. “We are extremely proud that John was invited to support this effort and to represent TRS in this way”.

“One of the great positives about Trailblazers is that they offer opportunities for people at all stages of their careers to improve their skills – whether they be straight out of school or already have some
industry experience, but are looking to improve and add to their abilities,” said Satnam.

“That flexibility will make apprenticeships attractive to a wider range of people from more diverse backgrounds and will be key to their success.”

Gibbs Hybrid, a fast growing Professional Services consultancy, welcomed Tom Brake MP to their Wallington Head Office to help celebrate the achievements of three young members of staff.

Gibbs Hybrid is an international people-powered business, providing Programme Technology Solutions, Total Talent Management Services and Outsourcing as a Service.

Gibbs Hybrid is working with Barclays to offer employment opportunities through a new initiative – Barclays Connect with Work. The project is a unique UK-based employability programme connecting individuals seeking employment with recruiting corporates.

The programme is aimed at supporting individuals aged 16+ with the aptitude and attitude to enter the workplace, but who face barriers to doing so. The programme helps to upskill these individuals, as well as helping them to connect with businesses who are recruiting. The programme additionally supports high-growth businesses and entrepreneurs to create entry-level jobs.

Through the scheme Gibbs Hybrid has recruited three young people, Connie Foster as a Delivery Team Administrator, Camilla Sacchetto as a Digital Marketing Coordinator, and most recently Stephanie Harman as an Apprentice PA to the Senior Leadership Team.

During the visit, the three beneficiaries of the scheme talked to Tom Brake MP about their experience of the Connect with Work project and the excellent help and support they have had from everyone at Gibbs Hybrid.

Digital Marketing Coordinator, Camilla Sacchetto says: “I started working as an apprentice at Gibbs Hybrid a year ago on the Digital Team and I have loved every minute of it. The company is very caring and nurturing and, as an individual, I feel I have blossomed. So much so, that I have just been offered a permanent role as Digital Marketing Coordinator. Gibbs really invests in its people and there is a clear career path for me now.”

Farida Gibbs, CEO of Gibbs Hybrid says: “We are absolutely delighted to be working in such close partnership with the Barclays Connect with Work initiative. Diversity is in our DNA and being able to help talented individuals from all walks of life – like our three wonderful apprentices – to have a great start to their career makes us very proud. We believe that everyone deserves a chance to be the best they can be and the Connect with Work scheme offers people that.

MP for Wallington and Carshalton Tom Brake, said: “From the inspirational young people I met at Gibbs, it is clear that Barclays Connect with Work and Gibbs are teaming up really effectively to provide first class job opportunities for young people who might have struggled to find a top notch job. I can’t praise the scheme, the young people, Gibbs and Barclays enough for making this work.“

Kev Jennings from the Barclays Citizenship team said: “Through Barclays Connect with Work, unemployed individuals who are struggling to find suitable employment are given additional support to apply for and succeed in job roles.

The key to the success of the scheme is the support from Barclays clients and suppliers who identify jobs for ambitious individuals and commit the resources to train and support people into those roles.

The proof of the value of the project is in the very positive impact Connie, Camilla and Stephanie are having at Gibbs Hybrid.”

EDF Energy further encourage and embed diversity and inclusion in their Supply Chain with multiple events

EDF Energy

Supplier blogs

As part of their Sustainable Supply Chain agenda, EDF Energy want to further encourage and embed diversity and inclusion in their Supply Chain and one of the ways they intend to do is by creating further awareness across their organisation.

To help support this their Supply Chain D&I Action Group (DIAG) will be uploading short introductory blogs of MSDUK members to their Supply Chain DIAG yammer profile which will be shared with internal stakeholders to help emphasise the positive impact of working with diverse suppliers.

BAME event

Cultural celebrations were laid on at six sites last month to encourage employees to find out more about Ramadan.

The lunchtime sessions were organised by EDF Energy’s BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) Network as part of a calendar of events to raise awareness of the richness of cultural diversity among employees. Previous events focused on the ancient Hindu “festival of light” Diwali, Chinese New Year and Easter. The purpose of the celebrations was to inform our employees what happens during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

Speakers shared information on health, well-being and the challenges of fasting and explained the cultural celebration of Eid. Traditional food was also provided on the day.

Tender award to MSDUK member

Last year, EDF Energy’s Internal Communications department decided to appoint a number of preferred suppliers to provide EDF Energy with video production services.

A dozen agencies were approached and a tender was released in February 2017. An MSDUK member, AdTube Limited, was invited to demonstrate its capabilities and submit a bid in the frame of that tender process. AdTube were shortlisted and eventually awarded a contract together with three other agencies. A two year (plus a potential two years extension) framework agreement was awarded to deliver video designing, filming, editing and producing services.

The contract was signed off in June 2017 and we are now looking forward to working together with AdTube.
