MSDUK’s Procurement Day 2009 Hailed as Major Success!

Two hundred leading business figures came together at the Emirates Stadium in London to explore opportunities to increase the levels of supplier diversity prevalent in all sectors of the economy.

Coordinated by Minority Supplier Development UK (MSDUK), the Procurement Day 2009 event gave individuals drawn from organisations as diverse as PepsiCo and Merck Sharp and Dohme as well as from over 100 SMEs, the chance to participate in a number of workshops, network and attend one to one meetings to discuss business opportunities.

Mayank Shah, Director of MSDUK described the event as one of the most significant to occur in recent years. “We all know how challenging the situation is for firms of all shapes and sizes at the moment,” he explains.

“There is a real need for SMEs to make sure they are chasing every opportunity and seizing every chance that is presented to them to work with companies that are setting not only the UK business agenda but the global business agenda.

“By bringing some of the most exciting SMEs in Britain together with some of the best corporations at Procurement Day 2009, we were able to not only get a two way flow of information going but also allow people to discuss opportunities one to one. We hope that, as we have seen at many of the other events we have organised, companies will go on to develop commercially successful partnerships that bring real benefits to both parties.

“Markets in the UK are competitive and therefore it makes complete business sense to tap into a supplier base that can not only provide the much needed competitive edge, but also represents the increasing number of ethnic minority groups in the UK.”

MSDUK works to provide its corporate members with an efficient and effective direct link to some of the UK’s most innovative and entrepreneurial minority owned businesses and provides assistance in the development of best practice supplier diversity programmes.
6th Edition of Minority Report Is Out Now!

In spite of the economic downturn, things have been very hectic over here at MSDUK since our last newsletter in February. Deloitte, Peek Traffic Systems and Dresser-Rand have joined our ever growing corporate family and there are 54 extremely talented ethnic minority businesses that have also become part of MSDUK. These suppliers represent a highly diverse range of industry sectors, including one of the largest suppliers of fresh fruits and vegetables in the UK, the country's leading importer of oriental foods and an extremely successful consultancy firm engaged in clinical audits for the health and pharmaceutical sector.

East Midlands Supplier Diversity Hub

MSDUK and East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) join forces to provide regional ethnic minority businesses greater access to private sector procurement opportunities.

A project funded by emda will help MSDUK raise awareness and identify ethnic minority businesses (EMBs) from the East Midlands to do business with some of the top global and British firms, including PepsiCo, ExxonMobil, Eversheds, KPMG, and IBM amongst others.
With more than £20m worth of business opportunities identified for 2009, MSDUK wants more EMBs from the East Midlands to get the opportunity to bid for these contracts and grow their businesses.

This ten month regional project, funded by EMDA, will see a number of networking events, breakfast meetings and outreach events being held across the region to:

• Engage with diverse networks, intermediary organisations , business support organisations, industry networks and ethnic minority business

• Provide information on all the contract opportunities to EMBs

• Raise awareness about MSDUK’s activities

Speaking about the project, Mayank Shah, director of MSDUK said, ’I am very excited about this regional project and commend EMDA in supporting our vision and efforts.  Ethnic minority businesses in the East Midlands already make a significant contribution to the regional economy and we at MSDUK would like to reach out to the maximum number of these entrepreneurs and help them not only to grow their business but help create more jobs in the regional economy and build sustainable communities’.

Ian Harrison, Head of Business Support and Enterprise, speaking about the benefit of this project, says, “This is great opportunity for ethnic businesses in the East Midlands to develop their business proposition, access corporate opportunities as well as strengthening their own networks.”

The project will be launched with a luncheon meeting, hosted by emda, for all the intermediary and business networks in the region. This meeting is being held on Monday, 9th February at emda’s office in Nottingham.

ETHNIC MINORITY BUSINESSES GATHER AT LEADING PROCUREMENT EVENT

10th Meet the Buyer - A Huge Success!

Over 100 ethnic minority business owners from across London and the south east gathered at the Institute of Directors to network and do business with some of the world’s leading blue chip companies.

In the latest of a series of hugely successful ‘Meet The Buyer’ procurement events organised by Minority Supplier Development UK (MSDUK), ethnic minority suppliers had the chance to take part in one-to-one briefings with corporate buyers from global players such as JP Morgan, Aramark, GW Professional, Tyco, Capital One and ExxonMobil.

Commenting on the success of the event, Mayank Shah, director of MSDUK, said: “Once again, we’ve received excellent feedback from suppliers and corporates alike. The interactive sessions were particularly popular and offered an informative insight into the procurement processes of some of the UK’s biggest and best known firms.

“At the same time, attendees benefited from two workshops, one which dealt with intellectual property rights and the other which addressed issues around certification.”

Bilal Hussain, managing director of Luton-based providers of bespoke corporate clothing and merchandise, Alvastone, said: “I’ve been to numerous networking events and never found them particularly useful. MSDUK’s event was refreshingly different and the one-to-one meetings were incredibly interesting, giving me a unique opportunity to talk about my business and find out more about corporate procurement.”

Reza Choudhury, managing director of chauffeur service company, Reliance Worldwide, added: “The event has benefited me immensely. As a new supplier to MSDUK, I feel very excited about the opportunities forthcoming events will present. To actually have the chance to meet decision makers from such large corporates is priceless – I would certainly urge other minority owned businesses to get on board with MSDUK.”

Concludes Mayank: “By identifying specific opportunities beforehand, we are able to match up suppliers with commodity buyers to facilitate mutually beneficial meetings. We help to open doors which, in turn, enables suppliers to embark on the often lengthy corporate procurement process with a view to gaining lucrative contracts in the future.”

Since its inception in July 2006, MSDUK has organised over eight ‘Meet the Buyer’ events which have brought together over 400 ethnic minority-owned businesses and 70 buyers from 26 corporate organisations and generated business opportunities worth over £9 million.

For information on future events please contact Louise McHale at louise@msduk.org.uk or Tel: 0116 254 2500.
