2009 NATIONAL MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL (NMSDC) CONFERENCE

The annual NMSDC Conference and Business Opportunity Fair is the US benchmark forum on minority supplier development which brings together Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American business owners, corporate minority supplier development professionals, purchasing executives and corporate decision-makers for four days, this year in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Despite the economic climate the conference was very well attended not just by US colleagues but with participants and Affiliates from around the World including Australia, An interesting introduction to the Welcome to New Orleans Reception held at the Audubon Aquarium of the AmericasChina, Canada, South Africa and of course, the UK.

The theme of this year's conference was "Minority Businesses and Corporate America: A Recipe for Success" and it certainly was a success for the MSDUK team. Mayank and Snowia attended the event this year with a small but select group of suppliers from the MSDUK network; Harish Bhayani from PRM Diversity Consultants, Gregg Strangway and Cal Stafford from Octavian and Lee Williams, Universal Service Solutions. Alongside our suppliers we also had two representatives from our corporate membership, Kiran Duhra from GlaxoSmithKline and Matthew Newall from Merck.
Harish Bhayani had this to say; “I knew this would be a worthwhile trip. It was a large investment, more in time than money, but we knew we had to make this particular commitment as an opportunity to further build our business and connections. I had a great time because we made some fantastic contacts for our business. It was also gratifying to see some senior people from world class companies seeking us out while we were there to learn more about our diversity consulting and training services, and thank us for making the trip out there. There is every chance that we will grow our revenues significantly as a result of the trip, and we have definitely grown our profile and reputation. The whole programme facilitated networking with the days and evenings packed with business or social events. There was a good balance of business and pleasure, all provided on a plate”

Along with the main business of the Conference, MSDUK were involved in 2 further events; the annual Global Link Reception, which we co-hosted and organised alongside the Canadian and US Councils and a separate MSDUK reception.

The Global Link Reception is fast becoming the highlight pre-conference event and we had great attendance again this year with our very own Mayank Shah acting as compere for the evening. The event provides an International air to the Conference and allows the NMSDCs worldwide affiliated organisations to provide updates on their programmes and to speak with potential and current corporate members.

Our own MSDUK reception on Tuesday evening was also a great success with a number of attendees from companies including ATT, Boeing, JP Morgan and American Express. Gladys Lopez, American Express, Mayank Shah and Lee Williams, Universal Service Solutions enjoying the MSDUK receptionThanks again to Capital One for generously sponsoring this reception.

The conference ended with a glittering awards gala, recognising some of the most talented minority business owners from across the USA and honouring corporations and corporate executives for their exemplary work on supplier diversity. For MSDUK, this event became special as PepsiCo were honoured with the Corporation of the Year Award by NMSDC. (see full story)

mEET THE TEAM - RAJ PATTANI

What’s your role and what are you responsible for at MSDUK?
As a Business Development Manager, my main areas of responsibilities include recruiting and developing relationships with our suppliers and corporate members in addition to other intermediaries and professional bodies.Raj Pattani

In order to help me achieve this and make sure we recruit the right calibre of suppliers I am currently undertaking a gap analysis. This will enable us to discover areas where we require suppliers and also where we may have a surplus number of suppliers and thus enable us to strategically recruit the correct suppliers based on demands of our corporate members. The analysis will mainly be focused around the following areas:

• Geography
• Industry
• Capacity/Turnover
• Combination of the above

What’s the biggest challenge facing MSDUK?
Whilst only being here a short time, it is evident that MSDUK is still a young and developing organisation and faces many challenges. I believe the main challenge facing us would be incorporating supplier diversity into the procurement process of our members and spreading the principles of MSDUK through each organisation. However, saying that, it is evident that MSDUK has taken some great strides and has come leaps and bounds since establishing in 2006.

Who would be your top three guests for a dinner party?
My first guest would have to be Alan Sugar, being such a successful entrepreneur and business tycoon. I have always dreamed of owning my own business one day and Alan Sugar is a great role model.

Kareena KapoorSecondly it would have to be Kareena Kapoor I have always been a fan of Indian movies and her performances have been inspirational ... who am I kidding, it’s because she is stunning.

Finally, being a fanatic fan of Chelsea football club, it wouldn’t be right not to have Frank Lampard as one of my guests. He is someone who I’ve looked up to and followed since I was a little boy.

Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?
Without a doubt it has got to be my mum. She has brought me up to be who I am today and taught me some invaluable lessons in life that no one else could have. She has always been there and supported me in every aspect of my life.

MSDUK SPREADS THE SUPPLIER DIVERSITY WORD

On the 7th October, Mayank Shah, Director of MSDUK, had the opportunity to present to a group of leading corporate executives on the benefits of and the business case for supplier diversity as part of an event organised by The Prince’s Seeing is Believing programme.

The event saw ten senior corporate executives from the wider spectrum of British Industry visiting social enterprises, community programmes and minority businesses in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Seeing is Believing is Business in the Community’s (BITC) flagship programme for engaging the UK’s top business leaders with key social responsibility issues. The purpose of the programme is to increase awareness and understanding of social issues, showcase and increase the positive impact which business can make in the community, and demonstrate clear examples of how businesses can make a difference both within the community and within their business.Satnam Brar, Maximus, Presenting at the Seeing is Believing event

Richard Evans, President, PepsiCo UK & Ireland lead the group of industry champions to visit these organisations and businesses, which included a visit to Sir George Monoux College, Active Change Foundation and ended their tour at the BITC for a presentation on the role of MSDUK in championing supplier diversity within the UK and to meet one of the ethnic minority businesses from the MSDUK network, Maximus. Welcoming the group, Richard Evans informed about PepsiCo’s commitment to supplier diversity and their engagement with MSDUK. Mayank Shah then briefed the group about the emerging business case for supplier diversity in the UK and how MSDUK is working in partnership with large corporations and ethnic minority businesses to develop a more inclusive corporate supply chain. Satnam Brar, CEO, Maximus (an IT recruitment and consultancy firm), was next, providing the group with his fascinating story of initial struggles to growing a business that is recognised as one of the UK’s fastest growing companies with a top 40 position in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 listing. Hopefully, as a result of this introduction to supplier diversity, we will see more large corporations joining the journey to a more inclusive supply chain.
